Cultural and biological preservation in Ecuador

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Ecuador | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

My photography is influenced by my studies in anthropology, politics and visual arts. Within my photographic practice, I aim to create visually engaging work that provides commentary on contemporary social and political issues, and creates opportunities for public dialogue.

I love photography because I believe that images are an engaging way to bring stories to people. My ultimate passion is to document and share untold stories through the medium of photography. I followed this passion in 2011 on my solo journey through the Caribbean, Central and South America. The most significant part of this journey was participating in a cultural exchange program in Ecuador, where I was able to share and learn knowledge in an Indigenous Shuar community.

The National Geographic photography competition would provide me with the opportunity to continue my passion of telling stories. It would enable me to develop my skills and confidence in the field, gain valuable insight into a photography career, and contribute images and stories to an international community.

I plan to develop my passion for telling stories into my career, and focus on developing and learning new skills within photography.
