Ripple marks carve the shore in the suburb of South Townsville where the rising sun is best viewed and where locals love to fish and take their dogs for morning exercise.

Beaches can easily get crowded but for a coastal city with a low population density (like most of Queensland) heading off to one like The Strand is more about communing with the noise of nature and sights of serenity, with coastal birds frolicking in the sand and water, as a seagull basks in low tide during winter.

A dog leaves a trail of paw prints after a morning walk when the tide is low in South Townsville. People and pets alike enjoy the city’s average of 320 days of sunshine a year especially in areas like this where dogs can run around freely and dig to their heart’s content.
