Saving Iceland: Resistance to Industrial Development

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Iceland | Thursday, July 4, 2013 | 5 photos

I really love the north. I’m Canadian, I’ve lived in Scotland, and I’ve traveled extensively in Scandinavia and the North Atlantic, but I haven’t been to Greenland yet. I have a deep love and respect for northern landscapes and cultures, especially as they face industrial development and rapid ecological change.

During my graduate studies, one of my research interests has been how environmental photojournalism can help people to form emotional connections to landscapes, and how that can be used in conservation work. While my photos have accompanied press releases and news articles for some of the environmental groups I’ve worked with, I’ve had no formal training, I have yet to be paid for my photography, and I’m desperate to improve my skills.

In my home province of Alberta, northern indigenous communities are on the front lines of the devastating environmental and social effects of Tar Sands expansion. I hope to contribute to their struggle, and to use my photography to give a voice to the wilderness before it disappears. By helping me grow as a photographer, and providing me with tools and connections specific to the north, this scholarship would help me fulfill that purpose.
