    There are [5] photos and [1] story about Iceland

    Puffins are busy preparing their breeding caves, although one of them stays curiously watching us as we take the photo. The bird is not endangered much by many terrestrial predators therefore it stays calm and fearless. by: annadal Views[205] The same cliff is a home to another bird – the Atlantic Puffin. It is known for being a skilled diver being able to submerge even up to a minute. The legs are short and set well back on the body giving the bird its upright stance on land. The photo shows a male and female at the beginning of the breeding season. It is hard to decide the gender as there are no colouring differences between them. by: annadal Views[166] At the cliff Dyrhólaey the sun is soon reaching its lowest point hiding behind a nearby glacier. This Northern Fulmar was standing in a very strong wind near by the cliff observing. It was fascinating to watch the birds skill opposing the force of the wind. by: annadal Views[240] This photography was taken at the cliffs of the peninsula Snæfellsnes. It is full of nesting Kittiwakes, which belong to the gull family. In the top left corner of the photo one can see a colony of an commonly met bird Auk (most probably Thin-billed Murre), which shares a lot of its looks and habits with penguins, although they are not related. Auks live on the open sea and only come to land for breeding on rocky cliff shores. The breeding birds leave white traces on a monotonic yellow-grey rocky surface adding structure and making it an unexpectedly an interesting sight. by: annadal Views[243] Iceland lies in the North Atlantic on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is a place where ice meets fire - it is volcanic active and around 11% of the land is covered by glaciers. The volcanic ground offers hard life conditions. Most of the island is uninhabited. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe (with an average of around three inhabitants per square kilometre) and around one third of the population is living in the countries capital. Before human arrival the only mammal living on the island was the Arctic Fox. An important part in animal life take birds. Although before human arrival to Iceland the island was extensively forested now the sight of a tree is rare. This is unfavourable for many bird species. But the long coastline offers a lot of space for breeding for many kinds of birds. The photography is taken at the Látrabjarg cliff, which at the highest point reaches 440m making it the highest cliff on Iceland. by: annadal Views[774]
