Start of the walk, on the beach at St Bees' Head, Cumbria, England
Uneventful flight to Heathrow, then a one-way car rental to Carlisle. From there, a 1-hour taxi ride to St Bees. Sounds cumbersome, but it was the cheapest and fastest way to get from London to St Bees.
We walked to the beach on the evening of our arrival, to mark the official start of the Coast to Coast Walk, from St Bees' Head on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea. Weather is magnificent, clear and upper 60s to low 70s, although the locals have said that August was one of the wettest months on record.
We ate at the pub recommended by our rather chatty landlord: chicken and leek pie with mushrooms (Anita is coming around in the mushroom department), lamb shank, and our first sticky toffee pudding of the trip. And some wine and local ales.
