Richard works at a corn processing facility recently built by the Chinese. It is intended to boost local capacity for producing cornmeal, a staple in the northern Mozambican diet.

Mozambique has huge tracts of fertile, arable land, but lack of infrastructure and inputs, plus the ongoing recovery from a brutal civil war, mean that many people still lack access to adequate food. Eliza buys vegetables from a middleman and resells produce at the local market. Her son Edson huddles close to her side.
