My subject matter was inspired by the thrill of taking risks and stepping out of my comfort zone. When I’m overseas, I’m much more likely to try new things—like zombie walking and drag racing—because I know my time abroad is limited. Traveling also reminds me that life itself is ticking away. I’d hate to return home and tell people my trip was just “OK.” I want to be able to say I not only love traveling, but that my life is enriched because of it. My films are themselves inspired by the thrill of having proof that I was “there” and took risks. In 2010, I earned my master’s in journalism. My first job out of school was as an online news editor that left me little time to practice my multimedia storytelling skills. I left my job to live with relatives in Sweden for three months and to film “Angie in Sweden,” my solo, 14-episode travel documentary series, which allowed me to practice filmmaking/presenting over time. My ambition as a filmmaker/presenter is to use creative storytelling to inspire others to take life-enriching risks of their own. Winning would mean that leaving my newshound job to pursue a career as a purpose-driven travel filmmaker/presenter was well worth the risk.
