Berlin - Friday 10th July 2009

GERMANY | Friday, 10 July 2009 | Views [412]

I can't believe that we are sitting on a train again, the days seem to be flying past, but at the same time it feels like we have been away for ages. Today marks the halfway point of our trip...still plenty to come. We both really enjoyed Berlin. The hotel we stayed in was like a palace compared to the shoebox that we stayed in while in Amsterdam. Again this was a family business, and the guy was really helpful in suggesting things for us to do. After we arrived, we made it a priority to find an internet cafe and upload some more photos for the blog, cos we were getting further and further behind. In addition to the new photo galleries, we also added some more to the Scotland one for those who are interested. We stayed in a really nice area, near one of the main shopping strips in Berlin. Yesterday we went on a bike tour, which covered many of the sites across the city. This was a lot of fun and the guy was really informative and helpful. As soon as I got on the bike, I accidentally did a big endo (front wheel stand – for those like me who didn't know). Turls pissed himself laughing for about 10 minutes! Sites we visited included Chekpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall, the holocaust memorial and the site of the nazi book burnings. While riding through the big park, we saw and old fat nude guy laying on the grass soaking up the sun. Yuck! The tour guide said that when the weather is really good, that area of the park is packed with fat old nude guys – I'm kind of glad the weather was a bit shitty! After the tour, we went and visited two more areas where the Berlin wall is still standing. One is called East Side Gallery, which is the area with all the graffiti. They currently have artists there painting different areas of the wall, which looks much better than the graffiti. I hope it stays looking that good. The next part of the wall we visited is the only remaining part that has both sides of the wall still standing. We went up a viewing platform and could easily see the death strip, the middle area where many people were killed trying to escape. We traveled into the Turkish quarter to have turkish for dinner – it was great! We were going to visit one of the museums on Museum Island, but by the time we finished dinner it was too late. I would love to return to Berlin one day, as two days just wasn't enough. It is a very liveable city, with so much to do. It's hard to believe that some of the buildings that look so old have only been rebuilt in the past twenty or so years, as 90% of Berlin was flattened in WWII. As I mentioned, we are now on the train to Prague, and the little compartment we are sitting in is so quiet I might try and catch a few extra zzzz's. Say hi to everyone for us! Ange & Turls
