11 december - scary cemetries

FRANCE | Wednesday, 12 December 2007 | Views [457]

itss almost five here and already really dark... its beeen very cold today - around 5 degreees ... and i got very excited before, i thought it was snowing haha .. it was only hail :) i will put some pictures up soon ..

next few days are going to be really freezing - between 2 - 5 degrees ...

we went to a cemetry this morning --- veryyyyy random!! yes i no hahaha ... mum you would've lovedd it ...

the cemetry was actually really pretty - i am not WIERD ...!!! haha .. the cemetry was called Pere Lachaise ... on the outskirts of paris

until 19th century, all of paris' cemetries were inside the actual city :S hundreds of little graveyards .. and paris STANK LIKE ABSOLUTE POO ... napoleon the first decided that smell wasn't a great thing for paris (im wondering why no other emperor hadn't realised this easrlier) ... so napoleon moved all the cemetries to the outside of paris ...

pere la chaise is really beautiful ... has lots of trees and greenery .. and some of the tombs are very architecturally intricate ...

the reason for tihs is because attitudes towards death in 19th century france were a bit ircky ... people didn't 'die' -- but instead death was talked about in euphemisms - ie. people 'went on long trips' ... people used to make excursions to visit these cemetries etc ...

so this morning, we trcked off in the freezing cold 4 degree wheather to pere lachaise WHICH IS ON A HILLLLLLLLLL which means the wind was awful ... (btw Chopin's grave is at pere la chaise) ... after about 2 hours, it was 12 PM ... it was SOO SOOOOS OOO FREEZING i couldn't feel my feet - AND I WAS WEARING TWO PAIRS OF THERMALS .. veryone was going to die of cold, because we were stnading a lot and not walking around

me and nici though - mmm this is enough ... so as the group went around a corner ... we sneaked off hahahahaha we found the exit to the cemetry and went and got chocolate --- it turned out at the tour guide lady took ANOTHER HOUR giving the talk!!! felt so sorry for everyone because it was so cold ...

in the meantime ... me and nici drank our chocolate viennois ... YUMMY AND WARMING ... these are big fat and thick hot chocolates with whipped cream :) yum yum yum ...

thenn we had another museum ... however, sylvia told us to meet at 1.45 .. it turns out the musem booking wasnt until 2.45 .. we had an hour of time to kill ... in the freezing cold ... sooooo i decided to 'accidentally' catch the train home in the wrong direction and came back home - screw the stupid musemu ... apparently it was some sculpture crap ... haha actually it was a pretty delibrate decision to come home ...

butttttt here i am ... waiting for nic to come home and counting down the time to dinner - ONE HOUR AND 50 minutes :D ... they should be home soon ... im glad in sitting in the nice warmth ... it is bucketing down outside - really heavily ... no more hail now just rain ... we have another class tonight after dinner ...

tomorrow is a full on day as well ...

and thursday but after thurs we are FREE :) we have two days to do our talks and then we present them sunday and then have a fairwell dinner ...

me and nic have done a huge part of ours -- i htink we are really on track

i spent heaps of time doing mine today

MUM U WOULDVE LOVEED THIS CEMETRY (will put up photos soon) ... you should come to paris, if for anything, to wander the cemetry

MUCHHHHHHHH LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
