My photo scholarship 2011 entry
South Africa | Friday, November 4, 2011 | 5 photos
I studied journalism and love writing, but have recently become enthralled in travel photography since moving over to Ireland in 2009 and travelling extensively through Europe and Asia. I love animals and went to Africa/South Africa in May this year. Unfortunately, I did not take a DSLR on this trip as it was a camping trip (my usual choice of camera is a Canon DSLR EOS 550D). I used a simple Canon PowerShot A1000. This meant I could not get terrific shots of far away animals, however, it made me really look at my technique and the image composition. This allowed to capture many places and also convey emotion with subjects I had closer access with including the locals, as well as framing landscapes. I hope my technique and eye for a great shot is enough for the judges. I would love to see how a professional travel photographer works and have the necessary equipment to revisit Kruger and capture its essence especially the animals with some good lenses. As stated, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. None of these photographs are cropped or manipulated in anyway. I am currently 27 and work in public relations for local government. I would love to break into the travel photography industry. Africa and South Africa is an amazing place and I will definitely return, hopefully through this competition. I acutally have a cousin that lives 10 minutes from the Melalane gate to Kruger and the stories she tells me from her frequent safaris is amazing. I was torn between entering these pictures and recent ones I took with my DSLR on the Great Ocean Rd. These included some amazing shots of a mother koala with her joey and lighthouses from great perspectives. I am most definitely available for those dates and fighting fit to be selected.
