Misadventures in My Own Island of Gringa-ness

What a great day for my language skills. Oh boy. I started out by saying “Mercias” to the server at breakfast. I was describing to her that the birds here are pretty damn funny. My conversation went something like this, “Yeah, the birds here are really funny. Their sounds are just not familiar to me, and there are a lot of birds in the garden next to the classroom. It's hilarious to hear the sounds while the professor is talking.” Martha was giving me a really weird look, and she asked, “What, like kissing sounds?” I was so confused, then I realized that I was saying the wrong word.
