Lugano...our last Swiss fix!

SWITZERLAND | Friday, 18 September 2009 | Views [513]

Got up early this morning in anticipation of our last Swiss fix, we all had Chocolate, bread, bircher, and yoghurt on our minds. The Swiss do it so well. Unfortunately coffee not one of their finer achievements, so grabbed one while we were still on Italian soil. Put the car on the ferry and crossed the lake. We were there in no time, after a very casual crossing over of the border....no passports necessary.

Lugano was very pretty, and had a very strong Italian influence (no stressing about the coffee required after all!!) Found the church we were looking for, the Church of Saint Maria Degli Angioli (not really a church tour we promise!) This particular one was decorated with fresco's painted by Leonardo da Vinci's disciple, Bernardino Luini in 1529, depicting the crucifixion. Was a good find too, had a little Last Supper influence on one of the walls, glad we took the time to find it...most impressive.

First fix...yoghurt (after the church of course!), second fix... bread and pastries. Edna bought a 16 euro cake!! Third fix...chocolate, and it was good! bought by the slab at 6.50 euro per 100gm, customer service as non existent as ever, lucky they make good bread and chocolate. Lady in the chocolate shop thought she was doing us a favour by selling us some of her chocolate!!! Would never survive in Australia.

...Next stop Bellinzona

The city of castles, UNESCO World Heritage listed for it's prehistoric settlement on Castelgrande hill. The castle itself was pretty cool, but the city was pretty ordinary, sorry Bellinzonians, but town had no character and buildings were a little lost in a time warp but not in a good way.

Got home and ate the 16 euro cake, lucky it was worth every cent!
