    On our first day in Kenya, my family and I visited a Maasai village within the Porini Amboseli Conservancy. The tribe leader was explaining that they make their huts out of cow dung, sticks, mud and grass, when I turned and saw this brilliant shot. A little Maasai girl was peering out of her hut and looking straight at me. by: alliesharpe Views[271] One of the strangest things about visiting Africa from an Australian point of view is the massive similarities between the two countries. The climate and landscapes are very familiar and it was hard to believe we had flown halfway round the world...until you see a Giraffe. This was one of the first Giraffes we saw on the trip, and seeing a creature this tall, and this unique was absolutely breathtaking. A characteristic of a Maasai Giraffe (as opposed to Reticulated) is their darker colouring, however this particular Giraffe was stunning; almost black in colour. by: alliesharpe Views[316] Seeing this Maasai village was astounding; the colours, the smells, the atmosphere, and the animals were wonderful. The Maasai women are incredibly impressive and having managed to capture their fierce expressions in several other photos; I was delighted to get this shot when they all broke into laughter at the children dancing. The Maasai lifestyle is something to be admired; the way they live off the land inspires me to get back in touch with nature. The women in this photo hand made some of the jewelery we bought at the Porini Camp and the proceeds go straight into conserving the land and wildlife. by: alliesharpe Views[253] This is 'Katrina', a female Sykes Monkey at the Gede Ruins in Malindi, Kenya. Malindi is a coastal town and used to be my Grandpa's favourite spot when he lived there in 1953-1958. This shot was taken while Katrina was patiently waiting for a banana from our tour guide and a few seconds before she leapt onto my back at his prompt. by: alliesharpe Views[295] Our trip to Africa stemmed from my mum wanting to revisit where she was born 58 years ago. This picture was taken in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy near the Porini Mara Camp; both places my grandparents would have visited in 1953. We found this female Cheetah 'Nabiki' dozing under a tree. Nabiki means 'long life' in Swahili, which was ironic as she was also known to be a 'bad mother' - having 2 sets of cubs both of which sadly died. She was our first Cheetah sighting of the trip and we hung around long enough to catch a yawn - giving me this shot. by: alliesharpe Views[240]
