About alexryan
I'm Alex. I'm a 32 year old man born and bread in the inner west of Sydney, Australia.
From a very early age I have loved photographs. They can take me to another place, make me feel, and inspire my imagination. A single frame can tell a century old story, and there is something magical about that.
I guess that's why I left high school to study photography at TAFE. It was a great learning experience and it strengthened my photography immensely, but it left me disillusioned about the prospect of being a career photographer. I couldn't see myself working in a studio, and at the time it felt like there weren't many other options, but I was more than happy to be an amateur photographer; I still derive a great deal of satisfaction from capturing an image that communicates something of the essence of the subject.
Since then I have traveled through north America, Asia and Europe, I have jumped out of a plane, ridden my push bike from Brisbane to Melbourne, directed several short films, acted in several theatre productions and studied directing at the prestigious Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
I now find myself teaching video production at the University of Technology in Sydney, as well as working freelance - directing music videos.
Winning this scholarship would be the beginning of the realisation of a dream that I thought would never be realised.
I would love to take photos that tell stories that are seldom told, and are viewed by a broad audience.
If I were to win this scholarship I would drop what I am doing at the moment and commit to it wholeheartedly.
