Photos: MJ remembrance street party

Shortly after the death of Michael Jackson, There was a street party held in his honour in Newtown, Sydney.

Nothing but the sounds of Michael Jackson blared from the speakers for hours.

The smiles and excitement of the party goers, a testament to MJ's talent.

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Photography has been a passion of mine from an early age, but it is something I don't get enough time for these days as a result of work commitments. to be perfectly honest I would rather be taking photos for a living than working behind a desk at a university. Travel allows the time and inspiration for me to explore my photography.
Recently I traveled to Cape York and participated in a traditional land management workshop focusing on fire as a land management tool. I was blown away by the depth of knowledge the traditional owners hold, and realised the importance of this knowledge, not only for indigenous communities, but for the broader Australian community.
As a result of this project and projects like it, western science, as well as government organisations such as the Rural Fire Services are starting to take notice and incorporate traditional knowledge into their practices.
It was wonderful being part of such a great project, the sort of project that is happening all over Australia, but with very little airplay.
This is something I try to do with my photography; tell stories that need to be told, but often get lost in the ether.
