Arriving in London

UNITED KINGDOM | Saturday, 17 October 2009 | Views [207]

October 17

Time: 8am

Location: Hotel in Seoul

Well, Internet is strangely working again. Not sure what is going on but it’s fine now so I’m not going to ask any questions. On the down side, there is basically not one free bed in all of London. Booked a dorm at the ‘Hyde Park Hostel’, which looks okay – sleepable at least. We shall see.

Have just gone for a walk around the hotel – it’s as far as I’m going to venture when I’m due at the airport in two hours. On close inspection the dark buildings from the night before are actually in the process of being built so obviously have no one in them. It’s still strange though; there’s about seven or eight of them all grouped together just outside of the CBD.

Actually all of Seoul looks like it’s either being built or falling down. Most streets have some sort of construction on them and everything is falling apart – sidewalks, buildings, cars even…walls are being held up with sandbags and there’s stacks of wood and brick seemingly holding up walls. It is a strange place.

Time: 1.23pm

Location: Incheon Airport

Incheon airport… wow. It is massive. It took me almost half an hour to walk to my gate. Apparently it was built in 2002 for a World Cup – soccer, perhaps? And there are ridiculous amounts of duty free. Man, am I going to have fun on the way home (:

Time: I think it’s midday. London time, that is.

Location: Siberia

Hmm. Announcement just came over (in Korean) and lady next to me gasped and started to pray. Should I be scared?

Time: irrelevant

Location: irrelevant

AAHHH TURBULANCE. My salad is flying through the air!

Time: No idea, my body clock is confused.

Location Ural Mountains, Russia.

Aaaannnndd I’m in Europe! Success!!

Time: 9pm GMT

Location: Well…

Oh my God. This hostel is disgusting. I was all proud of myself because I managed to get out of Heathrow and into London all by myself without getting lost once but then this just ruined it. Oh my God. The carpet is all ripped up, the doors don’t shut properly, the window is propped wide open with a bit of wood (keeping in mind it’s less than 10 degrees), everything smells like mould and there isn’t any pillows. Am almost scared to go to sleep because I have no idea what everyone else here is like and I’m afraid I’ll wake up with no passport and no cash. I haven’t seen a white person since I arrived here, I may potentially be the only one in the hostel. I am booked for three nights but I might try and find somewhere else to stay tomorrow. We’ll see how tonight goes.

I have also picked up a horrible cough from a horrible person on the plane. Korean stewardess convinced herself (and almost me) that it was Swine Flu but I doubt it… Very chesty cough, may go see a doctor if it isn’t gone in a few days.

Mind you, being in a hostel dorm with a window that doesn’t shut really isn’t helping.
