My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Turkey | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

I have been fascinated with photography for a long time. Coming from a small fishing village Kali in Croatia, where I had lived until I was eighteen, I moved to Rijeka to pursue college education and new life experiences. Among other things, in Rijeka I discovered a whole new and fascinating world of photography, which I have never been able to explore as much as I wanted. This is why I see this scholarship as a great opportunity to achieve that and spend seven intensive days with a professional photographer.

As a web designer/developer, I started searching for good photographs for my web pages. Many times I could not find what I was looking for, so I borrowed an old Zenit camera and started taking pictures of what I needed by myself. I liked it and decided to buy my first digital camera, and that is how all started.

Today, whenever I travel, I always take the camera with me. I travel quite often and always try to document the trip in a way that tells a story. This is sometimes very hard to achieve, and this is what I want to learn more about. Getting in touch with people and trying to retell their stories through a fraction of shutter-speed time, with a limited medium of a photograph is very challenging for any photographer, especially an amateur like me.

The photos I have chosen are from my last year’s trip down the former Balkan Express route from Zagreb to Istanbul, which was an attempt to immerse myself into this new culture I was exploring. The motives I have chosen are everyday images of Istanbul, and the way I remember the city.

I hope that my photos and motivation make me an interesting candidate for the scholarship.
