A Woman's Work is Never Done

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Turkey | Friday, January 11, 2013 | 5 photos

As a child my first camera was a Brownie Box, later superseded by a 35mm Zeiss Ikon when an indulgent great uncle realised I was serious about my love of photography and darkrooms. Life took me down other roads and I trained as a visual artist and educator, but always with a camera close at hand. Travel defined the early years of my adult working life but only recently have I begun combining the two elements and made plans for travel and photography to define my future directions. The technical aspects of photography have changed and with it often the emphasis of what image making is about. With a background rooted in the origins of the art I believe there are vital elements that will never change. For me it is about spontaneity, an image in the moment, having a camera in your hand, a rapport with your subject and capturing that story or moment in time and connecting with that time and place. For me sitting in front of a computer for hours endlessly tweaking is mind numbingly boring. Downloading and reviewing a days shooting may be exhilarating but the true photographer sees the image before they press the shutter and gets it right in camera and has no need to meddle and repair.
