My Scholarship entry - Beyond the Tourist Attraction

My name is Zina Thompson, I am an 18 year old student studying photography, media and art A Levels. Since a young age I have had a passion for photography, encouraged by my granddad, a keen photographer himself. Over the years I have explored many different themes and styles of photography through my studies, however keep coming back to the theme of finding beauty in something quite the opposite. On my trip to Rome in the summer, while everyone had their eyes on the famous tourist attractions, I was amazed by the old architecture with crumbling walls and peeling paint work. To see these buildings these unique buildings getting no attention at all showed me how people today don't focus on the little things that add so much character to a place, they barely open their eyes at all to look around them and just appreciate. Through my photography, I try to encourage people to see beyond the big things, to learn to appreciate and have a new perspective on the world around them.
