My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Different experiences make us who we are. The use of photography as an art form for me, creates a lens through which I see the world differently. Being unique is important to me because it creates variety and another perspective in our society. The different people I meet and the experiences I go through are all somehow infused in my art. With photography, it’s not just about the subject’s physical appearance, it’s also about what the photograph is saying; the story it’s portraying. Social injustices and suffering around the world, especially poverty, drew me to photography. I wanted to capture the hardships that people were going through and try to help them in any way that I could. However, I realized that I couldn’t help everyone who was impoverished, but I could do simple things for my community that would help those in need. Being exposed to many cultures from a young age, I have been able to take what I see and document that via photography. The camera is a tool that helps me break the unfamiliarity with the stranger. Winning this mentorship would not only enhance my skills, but will also teach me more about my future profession and bring a different view to the world.
