My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Indonesia | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos

I have a restless curiosity for people and places that keeps me
constantly moving. In my travels I am most interested in exploring hidden areas, meeting locals and seeing various sides of places from an anthropological point of view. Currently I am based in Solo, Java studying the Wayang Kulit
tradition of shadow puppetry and exploring the arts and culture of Indonesia. Recently I made a brief excursion to Bali where I made a point to invest most of my time with local people and to do my best to circumvent the tourist side of the small island. I discovered that there is a wide spectrum of use and strong
connection to the water that is unique to Bali and its people. From spiritual pilgrimages made to water temples to holy waters for ceremonies, water is a key component of the tradition and beliefs of the Balinese. In addition, it is of course a source of prosperity and livelihood to them with its fishing villages and tourist industry bringing foreigners to visit famous beaches. In contrast however the water is often abused and polluted due to a lack of sewage and garbage infrastructure leaving many streams, lakes and beach shores with pockets of ever increasing trash that will someday have to be confronted by the younger generations.
My deeply rooted and boisterously expressed joy for travel and seeing the new is constantly coming through in my photography practice and makes me the ideal candidate to capture unique aspects of mysterious Bhutan. I would be honored to have an opportunity to travel and work with Jason Edwards.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
