Discovering Bolivia by volunteering

BOLIVIA | Friday, 22 May 2015 | Views [138] | Scholarship Entry

My travel treasure occurred in the beautiful country of Bolivia. It was 2013 and I had the opportunity of spend my summer as a volunteer in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. I could never have imagined what an adventure I was about to live.
I arrived to Santa Cruz the first week of July with another volunteer, Lorena. We were going to participate in an AIDS program. I was going to make sure that the women that had the virus followed correctly the treatment in order to not let the virus get stronger.
Three weeks after a nun from New York arrived to the NGO. She was an investor in the organisation. She was in need of a translator and in Bolivia the resources are limited, so she asked me to be her improvised translator. I accepted after my supervisor approved my new activity.

I was travelling with the nun for all over Bolivia, not only by plane, but also in a SUV vehicle (modern nuns are amazing) for a month. This sister was a beautiful human being, I admire her job so much. She travels around the world buying typical things from developing countries, and then she sells everything in USA as fair trade, making sure that the artisan people get paid fairly and their work conditions are good.

I could meet the deep Bolivia: Oruro, La Paz... And the beautiful people of Bolivia. Since then I am in love with South America. It was a transforming experience, and I'll never forget that summer. The reward for helping others in my holidays was so strong and positive that nowadays I still ask myself how I was so lucky.
So much so, that in 2014 I applied for a scholarship in Chile and I have spent a year there. It was a great time, but Bolivia is a place that will remain recorded forever in my memory.
