My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

In February 2011 I embarked on an unforgettable journey through North America.
We then visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. This was an experience of its own. From Butterbeer to pumpkin juice and other not-suitable-for-muggles foods and beverages in the Three Broomsticks, we were definitely in a unique time and place and the food carried us through a journey that would otherwise only be experienced by witches.
Washington DC has the most amazing breakfasts. Every morning, we would trek from our hotel room to the most amazing eateries – each with heart-warming options to get your day off to the brightest start possible. The people of Washington love their daily bowl of delicious hot soup, pizza slices and breakfast rolls filled with anything you could possibly imagine… a tradition I sorely miss back in Australia. I now walk around Sydney wondering where I can find my morning soup, and end up thoroughly disappointed as I cannot find such a place. Only in Washington.
New York is an amazing place for food. The most memorable outlet was of course the hotdog stands, situated on every street corner and including right in front of the Met. With $1 hotdogs and ultra-convenience in a city that never sleeps, these vendors were unique to the city and really added to the Big Apple feel of hustle-and-bustle. Not to mention the aromatic flavours of freshly-roasted macadamias, almonds and peanuts from several vendors throughout the enormous Central Park!
Boston and San Francisco saw a constant mixture of clam chowder and Burger King as we neared the end of our trip and consequentially ran out of money from our hip pockets. There has been a debate on where the best clam chowder is – some say Boston has the original and the best, while San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is filled with outlets all selling the delicacy by the sea.
