Changing directions

Hundreds years of history, thousands tourists and thirty degrees. This summarizes my first day in the most beautiful city I have ever been to so far. When wondering the big squares, crossing the many bridges it is hard not to fall in love with Venice. As an History student I am always looking for the places and buildings I read about. However it was not the famous Piazza San Marco or the Doges Palace which made me want to visit this city many more times. It was an experience I will never forget.
When walking the routes everybody walks and waiting to cross bridges with my fellow tourists, I wondered which routes the local’s would take to avoid being stuck in a line of picture taking people who are awed by the city these locals are living in for so many years. I decided to find another way to cross the many streets. I changed directions and it was at this moment that I discovered the true beauty of the city.
Within two narrow streets I found myself in a garden full of beautiful flowers and an big old tree with no sound from the many tourists and shops which were only two streets away. It was after only one minute I noticed something very interesting. Within a short walk I could be alone in one of the most visited cities in the world.
Sometimes it is hard not to follow the masses and sometimes it is even more interesting. But it is in these moments of looking in another direction that you can really get to learn and fall in love with a certain city and wonder, how did I end up here?
