Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

For my submission video, I had planned to confound viewers’ expectations surrounding the unexciting word “fishing” by documenting my husband’s 2-day trip in pursuit of the vicious East-Asian Toman. But while shooting, it became clear that the aggressive, big Toman fish were not going to cooperate and that I would have to FIND another compelling story while filming.

“The Recipe” was born as I experienced the grueling commitment to trekking and paddling miles in search of these elusive fish. I have never witnessed such commitment and dedication for potentially little reward and discovered that “the recipe” for reaching one’s goal can even be applied to hunting Toman.

I am an English teacher, but have spent the last year learning filmmaking part-time. I’ve never felt happier. I have no documentary training or experience, so what an opportunity it would be to have a mentor helping to steer my creative (but unpolished) ideas. Receiving this scholarship would be like living in a dream for a week and I would live it to the fullest. I love the realness of documentary stories and would like nothing better than to make good, well-told stories on a full-time basis!

Well done Mary ... i enjoyed it for sure, good filming and production. Actors performed well. Would be good to know where it was filmed and to know if the fish are edible.

Thanks guys!
@Paul: This doco scholarship competition limited us to strictly 3 minutes. 3 minutes is a short time to pack in a powerful story and include everything, but... in a few days time you will be able to see on my Youtube channel (Myworldisatoz) the longer version of this expedition with many details and, of course, what happened to these fish *Add drum roll here! :-)
