For my submission video, I had planned to confound viewers’ expectations surrounding the unexciting word “fishing” by documenting my husband’s 2-day trip in pursuit of the vicious East-Asian Toman. But while shooting, it became clear that the aggressive, big Toman fish were not going to cooperate and that I would have to FIND another compelling story while filming.
“The Recipe” was born as I experienced the grueling commitment to trekking and paddling miles in search of these elusive fish. I have never witnessed such commitment and dedication for potentially little reward and discovered that “the recipe” for reaching one’s goal can even be applied to hunting Toman.
I am an English teacher, but have spent the last year learning filmmaking part-time. I’ve never felt happier. I have no documentary training or experience, so what an opportunity it would be to have a mentor helping to steer my creative (but unpolished) ideas. Receiving this scholarship would be like living in a dream for a week and I would live it to the fullest. I love the realness of documentary stories and would like nothing better than to make good, well-told stories on a full-time basis!
