The Colours of Kathmandu

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Nepal | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

Death is just a beginning to another life.

To the people of Kathmandu, instead of mourning over the death of their loved ones, they choose to celebrate the passing of their loved ones. I had a chance encounter with Gai Jatra or known as Cow festival while travelling in Kathmandu recently. The festival not only opened my eyes to the way they look at life and death but it also shows that sometimes celebrating death is another way to remember the deceased. This portfolio showcases the crowd during the Gai Jatra festival and the significance of death in their lives. While death is always associated with black and white, but through the lens, all I can see is the lively colours of Kathmandu.

I hope my submission for this competition will encourage especially those who just lost their loved ones. It is always been my dream to be able to narrate a story through my photos and what better way than by joining this competition. Personally, this portfolio is a real challenge for me as I am more of a landscape person than a portrait person. Hence, I believe that with my nature of always looking for more challenge and trying for new composition, I am the suitable candidate for this scholarship.
