My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Im currently traveling in India as part of a year in Asia. My intention was to expand my portfolio and advance my skills on a practical level but also on a social level, communicating with subjects. Portraits are my preferred method of telling a story as I feel that displaying the journey the people of various places have gone through and how this defines their modern culture is the most powerful way to illustrate a place and its story. Photography in Asia has led to a complete change in the way I work, with a 35mm AE-1 replacing a 7D. I decided I needed to get back to basics, taking good photos and not allowing myself to play with lesser quality work afterwards. Im now minimizing shots and working manually to force myself to consider composition, exposure and depth, and to explore originality so as to take the shot once and get it right. When I read that the scholarship is seeking somebody that is most eager to be mentored, work hard, and develop I felt perfect for it. My fascination with Arab history has led to an ambition to be a conflict/reportage photographer in the region so winning this would give an invaluable insight into the area Im passionate about and my goal career.
