A tourist picks out a Guy Fawkes mask with his partner. Every year Venice celebrates the legendary Carnivale festival, where the masqueraders take to the streets in their lavish costumes. Each outfit is topped off with a stunning mask. Some sequinned and gentile and others downright haunting. Choosing the right one is crucial to the role you wish to portray.

A local busker smiles as he plays a familiar tune on his accordion. I dropped a coin into his shoebox and he quietly thanked me in Italian. This was the moment, with music bouncing off every time-warn surface, that I understood the allure of Venice.

Venice is one of Europe's biggest tourist destinations. A brief walk and several bridges later and you may literally pass thousands of people. Rain, hail or shine, the tourists worm their way into every corner of the city. If you finally get sick of bumping shoulders, or become hopelessly lost, you can always jump in a Gondola.
