My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I am a keen traveller who loves taking photos, having travelled to every continent before recently turning 30. My mother travelled extensively in her early 20’s and from a young age my siblings and I were told stories of her adventures. We looked at her slides with intrigue and listened to the stories with our imagination leaping to life. She inspired a sense of wonder and adventure and having stood on every continent, my sense of wonder and adventure only grows further. So many people never have the opportunity to step out of their lives and experience the wider world, if I can share the world with them through my photos, I will have achieved my dream.
I love photography for the challenge of capturing a place in all its beauty and conveying a story to those who may view them, the opportunity to look at the world through a lens and capture a piece of the scene, and the responsibility to preserve a record of the world as it is for future generations.
With every photo, my skills as a photographer improve. A new angle, a change in the weather, playing with light and reflection, there’s so many ways to approach what many see as a very simple act of taking a photo. A good photo is harder than it looks!
My goal with photography is to develop a way to bring the world into people’s homes, and share people’s homes with the world, in such a way that people develop a greater appreciation for the similarities in humanity, and the incredible beauty of the world we live in. The exact means of achieving this still eludes me, but with every shared photograph, I see the spark of wonder and intrigue in those who look at my photos and I hope it inspires them to get out into the world and experience the wonder and adventure of it all.
