There are many ways to combat the affliction known as Delhi Belly. The easiest way to handle it is to pack enough Imodiums and Pro Biotics to OD on and carry a roll of 2 Ply in your backpack. The thing that nobody tells you about it is that it's perfectly normal and that not a single Indian has had a solid bowel movement for probably centuries.
My first experience of Indian food was at Leopold Café. It was also extensively mentioned in the novel Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, where it has become somewhat of a shrine to any fan of the book. However the restaurant has a more recent tragic past as it was one of the first sites attacked during the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The great thing about the place is that it doesn't serve only Indian food, which you will come to appreciate; after three weeks in India I can honestly say that I have never been as grateful for MacDonald’s. Which aptly brings me to my next experience of Indian food, on a train from Mumbai to Delhi -processed food- Indian processed food.
Saying India is densely populated is an under statement, and saying that New York is the city that never sleeps has clearly never strolled down Marine Drive,Mumbai at 3 in the morning.Indians have no choice but to get along, like a family. Everybody has to be very civil for the sake of co existing.
Wether it's a poor woman who ties a string of Yasmin around your wrist, or fruit sellers who try to convince you their Mango's are the best in India, or the Lemonade seller who realizes that you don't need much convincing, the heart of India is it's food and it's people.
Like Indian food one definitely shouldn't undermine the effect the Indian culture will have on you, you'll have to get used to it, it's a bit of a shock to your system, but the beauty of it is that you'll never forget it. India sneaks up on you and before you know it you're intoxicated with the gentleness and kind heartedness of it's people who have seen and lived through so much heartache.
