As all children, I was once asked: what would you like to become when you are older? Being me, I answered with a sparkle in my eyes: A fairy! But one’s dreams must be put to the test so you know they are the ones who fit the most to your passions. Expecto Patronas! 25 years later, I cast a spell and here I am in the land of the mystic, the gothic, vampires, black magic and witches and certainly Harry, oh yes indeed, Mr. Potter! Nothing is better than spending the New Year in Edinburgh. It is the Hogmanay, one of the biggest festivals world-wide celebrating the new year. Upon check-in at the hotel I had the encounter of the most unforgivable fashion crime! my entire room made of the same fabric used for Scottish quilts. Just few minutes of trotting in the streets, felt like walking on the pages of a history book. Now, you have to be sure that there is nothing like the “R” a Scotsman do in a Good Morrrning! With all that zing it brings to a new day! From Celtic to Gaelic, pipe bands marching the streets, my next stop was Edinburgh Castle. Arrived, to find a megalithic structure; perched atop the tallest hill with a medieval and rather panoramic view. As you walk around, there is that darkness and depth of spirits hanging from former lives around the Castle. By the time I was done, I was asking locals best place to feed my hunger, I was guided to The Last Drop! Dark and dimly lit, with wooden beams and brick archways leading to the back room. A traditional plate of haggis, neeps and trotties Followed by black-pudding! Turned out black pudding was made of blood! Now I know what being a vampire means! I ate blood! Oh God!
Followed by a meal for vampires, I wandered around the streets and not all who wander get lost!! Streets were turned into large preparations halls for the Hogmanay, not only does Edinburgh offer you a taste of fine history in its features but generously extends to offer you a taste of all cultures of the world. As more and more tourists start to arrive in the City, I can see more people from all walks of life coming together to share the memorable moment of receiving the gift of a new year! Food serves in all nationalities, even food of the pharaohs! Same as with dancing and music, it also came from around the globe. Fire-works lasted for 60 minutes after midnight! I end my night in the morning, feeling my wings have grown and spread ready to fly into a new year. Bless a land that makes your childhood dream come true. I am a fairy!
