The pursuit of happiness

That simple moment

IRAQ | Thursday, 28 May 2015 | Views [127] | Scholarship Entry

May, 40 degrees under the sun.
It was my first friday in my homeland, Kurdistan, in Sulaymaniyah exactly.
As a custom is normal spend the day on mountain among pic-nic and folk dances.
I used to travel in other places, i saw and met different cultures before that moment, but nothing in the whole world made me feel part in and strange in the same time.
I remember like yesterday the paillettes of traditional dress of kurdish women, the scent of the food, the folk music (inevitable in every situations) background for all day, the smell of hookah and the smiles of kids who played football wearing barcelona and real madrid shirts.
After a long day outdoors, in the afternoon we got in the car to go home...but of course we run into traffic.
Mountain roads where everyone tried to outdo the other, 2 lanes became 4 and the roadside were still busy of people who tried to cook the meat. Smiles and happiness invested me from every side.
Those two hours in the car were perhaps the funniest and strangest of all my life!
I felt like in a movie and I started to imagine stories about every face I passed.
I was there, in that precise instant, moment, second. I was there, exactly where i supposed to be.
That journey, that friday made me live that semplicity that unfortunately in the hectic life of Milan, i lost too much time, and now, lying in my italian bed I'm really asking myself if I am where i should be.
But, back to the story, nowhere else where I've been ,I saw so many families enjoying the day off together! Perhaps only in the Filipino culture.. and this I think is one of the most important things in life to try to spend our free time with those we love, but especially in contact with nature, and far from all this technology that leads us to lose ourselves and relationships with those around us.
The reason why I wrote about this episode is because i want to tell about Kurdish culture and not only them, i want to "show" how is possible live our life in simple things and that is not all lost. We must wake up! life is too short.
