Just Around the Corner

After a grueling car trip turned bus ride down from The Last Resort with some lingering affects of Bali Belly and losing the lingering high of bungee jumping 160m over a raging river, we arrived in Kathmandu filthy, hungry and tired beyond reason. Desperate to find somewhere to sleep for the night and unwilling to grapple with the packs to find our well worn Lonely Planet, we were interrupted by a friendly local man. After repeated assurances of the safety and comfort of a hotel that was literally just around the corner, we decided we were either going to be dragged around a strange alleyway to be robbed OR there was, just around that corner, the greatest hotel known to Nepal. And the greatest hotel in Nepal is not to be turned away. We ended up following him around quite a few corners before finally coming to a stop in front of a colourfully tiled hotel with "Hotel Leader Palace" brightly painted on the front. This hotel ended up being our safe haven in Kathmandu. Just out of Thamel and blessedly quiet (plus, they had a TV), the staff bent over backwards to make our stay as amazing as possible, from turning on the generator when we were there to offering any and all help in navigating the streets. This attention could have been because we were some of the only people in the hotel, but no matter, this place truly was a hidden treasure and exactly what we needed after two months of moving around constantly.
I have no way of knowing if the lovely staff there are safe, nor if the hotel still stands after the horrible quake that hit the country, but I will always be grateful for that Nepali man on the street for showing us to that little hotel round the corner of the corner.
