City of Cirebon, West Java is famous for it's batik and inticed me to come there to see first hand the process. Before I completed my final project in architecture department, I decided to go there. I witnessed the process of making Batik cirebon's home industry. Their skill playing with a canting (batik tool) fascinated me and urge me to capture it in a series of photographs.
Through this photo essay, I tried to tell about the batik cirebon home industry and unveil how the regeneration process from older to younger generations are becoming less. Batik's home industry began shifting to the modern batik using the machine. Expertise of making batik by hand began eroded by time
Batik is one of the world cultural heritage and very valuable art so I hope that through these photos, we will be able to catch a glimpse of these endangered cultures and evoking friends inside and outside the country to increase attention to this culture. As a photographer, I believe that the photograph can tell you what can not be expressed by words and that's what I would do for the rest of my life.
Personally, I think by winning this scholarship to South Africa can give me an invaluable experience through stories that unfold in front of my eyes and gives a new view in interacting with new cultures and new friends, much less accompanied by one of the best in his field, Mr. John Edward. This scholarship will be a life-long wish to give me a new perspective in viewing the world we live now.
