Volgograd.
I bet many will scratch their heads. I get that a lot. In short, Volgograd is the city where the decisive battle of World War II took place. When I decided to write about this, It was the eve of Victory day. Talking about perfect timing.
The Parade
Venue: Square of the Fallen Fighters
Time: 10 am
70 years since the Russians declared victory, until now, the spirit of Patriotism, remorse and pride still lingers. There is no way you could wake up late and catch the parade. It’s the 70th parade in town and it still gets the Russians excited. Not just them, there are tours coming from other countries, other states. Imagine how many people are there, fighting for a spot. Don’t be surprised if you see people climbing the trees.
Rule 1, arrive early and stand at the entrance of the main gate (the whole Square will be closed down for preparation). They are quite on time in terms of opening the gate. When you start seeing people running, the gate is open.
Tip 1: If money is not an issue, try booking a room with balcony view in Volgograd Hotel or Hotel Intourist. Save you all the hassle.
Tip 2: If you arrive 2 days earlier, the state is giving out VIP seats for the parade. Find out where and when (varies year to year).
Why is the parade worth watching? 9th May, Victory day itself, is the day of remembrance, especially in Volgograd, for winning the Stalingrad Battle after 200 days and 200 nights. I’m not exaggerating by saying that May 9 overshadows “Russia Day” in June. According to a recent poll in Russia, May 9 is as important as their own birthday. So how good will the parade be? I’ll let you do the math!
Before I got over the Tankers, the parade was over. What you should do next? heading over to Mamaef Kurgan!
The centerpiece of the city
Trolley bus from Square of the Fallen fighters: 1, 12
Stop: Mamaev Kurgan
Holding her sword with mouth open, Mother Russia stands in pride with a height of an impressive 91 Meters.
Do:
1. Take the 200 steps walk up. The steps represent 200 days of battle.
2. Take the obligated illusion photo holding her outstretched arm while “running into the battle”.
3. Watch the change of Guards in the memorial house of the eternal flame.
4. Mesmerized by the walls surrounding the eternal flame. Carved into the Mosaic wall, are the names of soldiers who gave their life protecting the city. Lost but not forgotten.
Wrap up your day watching the Annual fireworks presentation (Venue varies each year). You'll regret if you don't.
