The Land of the Midnight Sun

The Land of the Midnight Sun

FINLAND | Thursday, 15 May 2014 | Views [137] | Scholarship Entry

I held my arms up in the air and embraced the freshness of the summer breeze. The wind tickled my fingers and brushed my hair. The only sound I could hear was complete silence, which made me instantly forget about any worries on my mind. I had journeyed there to escape the bustle of the busy world, and to this day, I can’t think of any place more peaceful.
I glanced around me. I was surrounded by nothing but stunning scenery everywhere I looked: endless forests beneath me, flowers almost everywhere I looked, mountains glistening in the mist far away. Typical to Lapland, curious reindeer were the only living creatures keeping me company. They would briefly glance at me in merely a nonchalant manner and go on with their daily lives uninterrupted.
What seemed most surreal was that I had arrived at Levi precisely at midnight, but the sun appeared more beautiful than I had ever seen it before. Atop one of the highest fells in Finnish Lapland, I could feel rays of sunlight burn my skin. Each gleam felt like the most hopeful morning, vivid afternoon and endless evening all combined into one.
After endless hours of travelling, I had finally reached my destination. It felt incredible. Lapland, the land of the midnight sun, astonished me with its effortless beauty. When you travel North enough during the summer months, the Finnish sun never sets. I will never forget that night, because it made me realize the strength that lies in peaceful solitude.
