The Locals

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada I had never been outside of North America until at the tender age of 13, I was brought to China. Needless to say, it opened my eyes. I found myself photographing the culture; the people, the architecture, the streets… rather than my family and I eating lunch at the Hard Rock Café. Although I did not realize it at the time, what interested me, and continues to interest me is not documenting a personal experience, but rather using photography as a method of communicating the happenings of the world. It was then that I had not only been bitten by the travel bug, but the photo bug as well... If anyone says that.
When I began to have a choice in what I wanted to study, photography was always at the forefront of my decisions, from Media Studies in high school, to a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. What interests me is not only the information we communicate, but also how we communicate it, or as the great Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan once said “The medium is the message” and my medium is photography.
Once graduated University, I took a “gap year” and traveled the world. The United States, Europe, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand were all amongst my destinations.
I do not want to photograph families in a studio or anything of the sort. As heart warming as it may be, it does not contribute to greater good, as cliché as that sounds. I am someone who needs to be challenged, who needs to learn, who needs to travel and who needs to be taking photos, because I have something to say, and a unique way of saying it. This opportunity would be a dream come true.
