The Pinnacles Hut warden recounts of last weeks’ 3-day search and rescue mission for a missing hiker in the Kauaeranga Valley below.

Swing bridge over Webb Creek. With only a small amount of rainfall, the marked river crossings can flood to dangerous levels. Emergency bridges and flood detours were constructed to improve track safety.

The final 100 meter ascent of the Pinnacles track is treacherous and requires bouldering skills. These hikers are using steel ladders and step-rungs mounted by the Department of Conservation to make the climb safer and more accessible.
