CHILE | Thursday, 8 May 2014 | Views [107] | Scholarship Entry

I'll never forget the day my Father took me up to the Atacama dessert in the North of Chile, where I grew up. While we were in the car he told me how we were from there, how my great Grandfather who has my Dad's name married an Aymara girl. Then I remembered what they've taught at school that week, how people from the south of Chile came to work to the north in the Saltpetre industry like a hundred years ago and how those people came to stay. They married, had children and formed a family. And it hit me. It hit me hard. I am part of history, we all are part of history.
My dad pulled over and we stand there in the void that is Dessert, nobody around just the sun, the sand, the wind and us. My father looks at me and tells me "this is the landscape where our ancestors fought on the Pacific War and I think if we dig far enough, we'll find something", we started walking around and soon enough we found something and it was a bullet. And the dessert we were in became too desserts in my mind. The one where I was walking with my dad on a lovely trip and the one where a war was fought.
That's probably the most important realization that I ever went through. If we dig deep enought in the places we are or that we have been, we'll find another places, places we've never been to and that's for me what travel is all about, discovering things and most important, things that are hidden for the uninteresed eye.
