My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

The pictures I selected for this competition immortalize a short stay in Venice in September 2009, on the occasion of the contemporary art exhibition at the Biennale and the prestigious film festival, when the city fills up with tourists.
I chose these particular pictures because they symbolize the very moment I realized that taking pictures is much more than a simple hobby to me. The moment when I understood that the objective is part of my eye and the means to translate my reality and give it back to the eyes of others.
These are the first pictures that thrilled me to the point that I felt an urgent need to stop instants, and led me to take more and more pictures without any fear.
These photographs are supposed to express my relation with this city.
First of all they are all black and white, cause Venice is black and white to me, a marvellous and melancholic portrait. Venice is immobile like its canals, crystallized in its beauty, so much beauty that it turns into a stage, run through its tourists and the few inhabitants.
Venice is a “wrapped” city able to take the breath of its visitors away, even when its architectural masterpieces are hidden or flanked by huge advertisements. A controversial combination giving it a further aura of wonder and mystery.
