Understanding a Culture through Food - Stomach and Food: the ultimate love story.

When tourists from within a particular country roam around the country, it is mainly the architectural element that they look forward to. The monuments, ancient buildings and what not. On the other hand, when tourists come in from outside to visit, they try to understand that country through what it has to offer. Things such as food, monuments, people and festivities play an important role in doing so.
Consider my country India for example. Even when Indians go cross-state travelling, they tend to bring their own ‘theplas’ and ‘poori-bhaajis’. Some things never change. It is a country with states having taste buds as different as heads and tails and its food is something that differentiates it from other countries. Rich in history and spices, India is one country to keep on your list, while travelling. People come from outside to consume the ‘butter chicken’ and ‘paneer butter masala’ of the North, ‘momos’ of the East, ‘vada-pavs’, ‘chaat’ and ‘cutting chais’ of the West and ‘idli-sambhar and dosas’ of the South.
In a country where idlis and dosas are sold more than flags on a national holiday, we are yet to prioritize our needs. But, the fact remains that we can try to understand the culture of a country, or even a particular city, through its food. After all, it’s not wrong when they say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
