The Asmat attend Sunday mass at the cathedral Agats. Before the influx of Catholic doctrine in the 50’s, the Asmat do not know a concept of God. Relationships rituals they do with ancestral spirits, which they respect. Beating tifa and dancing is a medium to communicate with ancestral spirits.

Welcome to Agats. Pastor Jan Smith monument stands in the harbor Agats, the only gate to Agats City. Pastor Jan Smith was murdered in his efforts to spread education for Asmat children. Since the incident, the tidal floods often hit Agats. Then the authorities built this monument, to commemorate the services of the priest Jan Smith and as a symbol to deny reinforcements. Believe it or not, the local people say that it works.

Activity in a simple church at Us village. Asmat carvings interpret the figure Mother Mary holding the baby Jesus in the imagination of an Asmat carver. The idea Asmat carving is very unique and original.
