Life as it should be

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

The most memorable and meaningful holiday I have ever had wasn’t overseas, it didn’t involve sun loungers or massages, and I didn’t stay at an expensive hotel. It is easy to forget to appreciate the little things in life, as it is easy to get caught up in studying, working and habitual routines of life in the city. I value little things the most. Drinking tea, watching the sunrise, not caring what you look like, just being yourself, not being judged, catching someone’s eye and knowing that you are both thinking the same thing and smiling because you know they understand. Time stands still. For a couple of days, I was happy for time to stand still. I didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.

I am passionate about honesty, truth, travel, people, different places and spaces, and capturing fleeting moments on camera before they disappear. I am passionate about what is real, and what’s not. Sometimes I find it difficult to tell the difference, but I love capturing photos that are raw and real. I love to prove people wrong. I love to surprise people.

I have South African heritage, so to travel to a country that means so much to my family would be an absolute dream come true, to capture candid moments in a fragile country with no make-up on. Just the truth, exactly as it is, as it should be. I think this is rare, and something that people should see more of.

I have never felt much like I have been very good at anything in my life. But photography provides an enormous amount of certainty amongst the anarchy. It is for this reason that I know I would not waste a second of this amazing opportunity with Jason Edwards.
