My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

I’m Kirsten, 28, from Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. I submit my photos today to tell a story of the loss, devastation and the comeback that Darwin, as a city and society, have been through. These photos represent the grim history of Cyclone Tracy that ripped through Darwin on Christmas 1974, leaving a path of devastation. Even more devastating is the bombing of Darwin that occurred on 19 February 1942. It is important that we remember the innocent and the people who gave so freely and nobly of their lives to protect this country. Lest we forget.

I have often day-dreamed about travelling to countries all over the world to take amazing photographs, photographs that aren’t just beautiful, but tell a story and inspire people. I really want, nay, I need to win this competition. Although I love my current job, photography is my dream and I long to pursue it. You may ask ‘why now?’ As an adolescent, fresh out of high school in 2000, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life; I attempted two different degrees before completing a Bachelor of Environmental Science. I have since set down my roots here with a career, family and mortgage. My family wholeheartedly support me in this.

I procured a Canon 350D in late 2005 before undertaking a road trip with my husband around Australia. I took many great photographs, but not amazing. Being mentored by Jason Edwards would allow me to refine my technique and take amazing photographs. As an environmental scientist, my mind is quite analytical; however I have the creative ability to look at landscapes, people and wildlife from a different perspective. If you pick me for this scholarship, you will not be disappointed. I am hard working, professional and willing to learn.
