Growing up in Knightdale, North Carolina was a challenge for me. My parents are both from Trinidad and the kids at school would constantly question my ethnicity, race and religion. There was a point where I was even ashamed of my culture and who I was. I never quite felt like I fit in and I always dreamed of living in a big city full of people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. I always envisioned myself living in New York City. To me, it symbolized complete freedom of expression.
Ok, so let's fast forward to January 2013. I had graduated college that past May with a degree in Television Broadcasting. I had been looking for a job in the TV industry since graduation but had no luck. I knew, despite my parent's opinion, that I had to take matters into my own hands. I didn't want to end up an unhappy adult who never followed their dreams. I couldn't imagine settling for a job and life that I wasn't passionate about. I decided that I would just move to NYC and chase my dreams of working in the TV/film industry.
January 11th, 2013, I got on a one-way flight from NC to NY and stepped out on faith. I will never forget the day that I moved to NYC because it has been the best decision that I have made for myself thus far. It also made me learn the importance of listening and relying on my gut instinct. I now work in the TV/film industry and I am steadily developing a career for myself.
New York City has forced me to face my fears head-on. I have learned that you can accomplish anything in life once you work hard and never give up on what you believe in. I have met so many awesome and genuine people from different walks of life that are all passionate about something. I have also been exposed to a variety of cultures.
I will never forget the day that I moved to New York City because it is the day that I finally became free.
