From the Canton Tower in Guangzhou I saw the sun setting into pollution before it disappeared beyond the horizon. Lenient environmental regulations are destroying the health and vitality of China’s air and water supplies.

The city of Guangzhou is at the heart of China’s developmental dilemma. At the epicenter of the “world’s factory,” the city is simultaneously generating astronomical amounts of wealth and severe levels of pollution.

As the world’s surging superpower, China should become a model for other newly industrializing nations to find the balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. Though much of the eastern half of China is covered with cities, the western half remains largely undeveloped. Chinese businesses and government need to set a new standard in adopting environmentally-aware development policies to protect wild areas such as the Meili Mountains in the fabled land of Shangri-La.
