No one can be sad in the Caribbean

Recently I was invited to stay for a week in St Lucia, with a friend of mine that was doing her final year Medical placement out there.
Now this wasn't an ordinary friend, I believed this could be the start of something, a budding romance in the making.
We had already travelled to Budapest and Bratislava over a long weekend and I thought that this would build on the success of that trip.
But alas, a week before I was to fly out I got the news, she had met someone out there and didn't feel the same way. 4 days of soul searching and torment later i brushed myself off and thought those immortal words "YOLO!" I may be hurting but its the Caribbean, no one can be sad on a tropical island!
And boy was I right. There were times when I was sad or lonely, but it's hard not to smile when you are surrounded by natures beauty, crystal clear seas, white sand beaches and locals that just make you laugh.
From the imposing cliffs and coves of the Cap Estate, the majestic Pitons soaring over the picture perfect sea, and the friendliness and willingness of the locals that just want you to enjoy your time on the rock they call home, it really is a a place to visit.
My personal highlight was hiring a 4x4 we called Frank. The freedom of hiring your own vehicle is one I must encourage you to do. The sense of awe your get when you unfold the map and can say "So where shall we go?" is one of the greatest feelings.
As a bit of an adrelaline junkie, it was made all the better by the twisting mounatain and coastal roads, the locals who seem to have no regard for their personal safety and the jaw-dropping vistas that come around each corner, making keeping your eyes on the road ahead a challenge.
Over the week I truly learned a lot about myself and what I can do. Lessons I would never have known had I stayed at home and felt sorry for myself. These were personal developments I only got by putting myself out there and travelling. Yes it cost a lot of money, and yes it may have stopped me doing other things, but what it has left me with is priceless- experiences, memories and wisdom.
So if you are ever in doubt about a trip, or something happens which makes you think about not going, just think about the things you can't measure, can't quantify.
Because this is the spirit of travel, and this is why you should go.
