My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Welcome to the warm heart of Africa – Malawi! To move from ‘Western Civilization’ in South-Africa to ‘Dark Africa’ was like cold water in my face eight years ago. Today it’s the best thing that happened to me.
Had we not moved to Malawi I would probably never have discovered how much I actually love travelling, meeting new people and experiencing new things. Held back by fear of the unknown we took a leap of faith and it was more than just eye opening…it was life changing. In the end life is made up of experiences and I intend to experience as much as possible.
Photographs provide us with a frozen moment in time to bring back all those wonderful memories and leave a lasting impression not only on you but everyone who sees it. The photographs I submitted has all left a lasting impression on me.
Whether it’s Lake Malawi that provides you with that sense of peace and tranquillity or the hope which the first rainfall can bring with children embracing the new change. A next harvest is vital after which tobacco farmers will take their tobacco to the auction floors by any means possible and then patiently waiting while living up to the Malawian saying of’ Hurry up and wait”.
Baobab trees are a common sight with villages nestled underneath them; keeping an eye over her children and providing them with food and herbal medicines. The people of Malawi still live a very basic lifestyle. Yet with all the hardships that they have to face, they remain humble people who enjoy the simple things in life. Wherever you go, in Malawi, there will always be someone to welcome you with a welcome smile and warm eyes.
Finally, getting this scholarship would be an experience of a lifetime for me and one that I would embrace 110% to learn more about photography and absorb everything that Bhutan has to offer. In the end, providing others with photographs to experience the mind blowing impression that Bhutan undoubtedly will leave on me.
Leaving you with greetings from the Warm Heart of Africa!
Tsalani bwino.
