The local government of Gunungkidul has developed an enormous reservoir called Embung Nglanggeran. In Javanese, “embung” means pond. This artificial lake is built in the peak of primeval volcano Nglanggeran, around 500 metres above sea level. It is used for watering purposes and, recently, as tourism attraction as well.
