Mont Saint Michel

FRANCE | Friday, 25 October 2013 | Views [144]

We spent most of the day over at Mont Saint Michel. A fascinating little island with just one street winding its way up to the glorious Abbey. The views over the bay from the terraces around the Abbey are magnificent. There are twenty rooms inside the Abbey which can be visited. The route through the Abbey is very cleverly designed so that the 'people traffic' flows smoothly and so, even though you really have absolutely no idea where you are after all the twists and turns up and down stairs, you can't get lost because you just keep going until you're back outside again. The Cloisters were particularly beautiful. The fireplaces were massive - I could stand inside them quite easily.

We had the speciality of the island for lunch - the Mont St Michel Omelette. It was as light as a feather. When we got back to our little house we spent a bit of time on the internet as we've decided not to go to Limoges, Toulouse and Montpellier for just one night each but to go to Lyon for three nights instead. One night at a place is a big pain in the proverbial when you're living out of a suitcase. And Lyon is apparently the 'gastronomic capital' of France so we simply must go there!

Talking of food (I realise I've been doing a lot of that but that's because I've been eating such delicious food every day), we went to a creperie five minutes walk from our accommodation for dinner (Creperie du Couesnon) as we hadn't actually eaten any crepes since our first day in Paris. Another feast where I just had the salad for my main meal so that I could pretend I was being healthy before I had dessert. I was then able to do justice to the Crepe Normande - fried apples flamed with Calvados which is a locally produced apple brandy.
